We started riding under cloudy skies on the 4th and put in some miles early to get to Bemidji for a great grocery store lunch. We busted out of town and exitedly entered the George Washington National Forest where we found good bike path and made our way to Cass Lake, where we chilled by the water and threw the disc. We next rode on Forest Route 2167/W Winnie Rd which was an awesome treat. We made our way to the Mississippi River in Itasca County where we jumped off of Rt 2 and swam in the water of the most American river. We got back on the road and started cruising as a pack travelling at 22-24mph howling through small towns. It was a joy to flow through the golden hours of the day with speed and ease after the headwinds of of North Dakota. The challenge had just made us stronger and today we were proving it. We stopped at LMNO P-ZA in Cohasset for some grub. While we waited for our Mushroom and Cheese Pizzas we played pool, listened to The Darkside of the Moon and explored Native American symbolic imagery on the walls of the bathroom. The pizza put quite a spark in us and we happily got back on the road to Pokegama Lake Golf Course where we had learned there was a fireworks display. We cought a spectacular sunset as we dipped west and crossed the Paper Mill reservoir and then followed the stream of cars to our destination. As we entered the golf course we made our way to the driving range, threw down our bikes and began to run and throw the disc ecstatically. At one point we thought we may have been out of place on the course but a golf cart arrived with an American family who assured us that they were proud that our travelling crew had chosen to spend its Independence Day in Grand Rapids. We were full of life and energy after the epic day and continued to run and throw with passion until the fireworks began. We played catch with some younger kids who asked if we were professionals. We watched the light show and I smoked furiously in an attempt to ward of the mosquitos. Although the fireworks were all right I didn't pay much attention to them and was more engaged with the simple reflection of the days events. As I happily pondered my place in the universe on the 100 yard sign of the driving range, the rest of the crew found me and I happily informed them that we had done it, achieved the mythical "100" that we have been programmed to achieve in all our years of school. We set up camp on the golf course while discussing sci-fi movies and went to sleep.
